Teacher Talk - Examinations and Assessment

National ESTA Chair Cathy Elliott is sounding out opinion on the combined Trinity/Guildhall Examinations

Here are some starting points for thoughts and discussion on the merger of Trinity and Guildhall exams. If you want to put your name(s) and contact details (preferably email) at the end of any suggestions, this will be useful if any further follow up is needed.

Repertoire:

  • List specific pieces you like or dislike on either current syllabus
  • Suggest other pieces for inclusion, with suggested grade

Scales:

  • If the Guildhall progression were to be adopted, what would you have to say in favour and against?
  • If you are a Trinity user, do you use the Scale Studies?
  • What can you say in favour and against Scale Studies?

Supporting Tests

  • What do you think of the current aural tests? Please be specific about which board you are referring to – they are different!
  • What are your views on Sight Reading as currently tested in Guildhall and Trinity exams. Please be specific about which board you are referring to in comments
  • Do you think the tests should be changed? If so, what ideas do you have for improving the current tests or for alternative tests?

Examiners

  • Does it matter to you whether the examiner is a string specialist or not?
  • Do you make use of the special visit facility offered whereby you can choose the date of the exam if you have more than a certain number of candidates? Did you know that both Trinity and Guildhall currently offer this?

Marking Scheme

  • If you are a Guildhall user, what are your likes and or dislikes with the CLEAR system?
  • If you are a Trinity user, are there any things you particularly like or dislike about the way the exams are marked?
  • Would you be in favour or against pieces taking up to a total of 70% of the available marks in an exam?

Of course, any other comments relating specifically to string examinations or to instrumental examinations in general will be useful in the development of the new merged Trinity-Guildhall syllabus.
