Making contributions to the ESTAWM website

Please keep to these little rules to keep everything sweet for everybody.

Is my contribution welcome?

  • This website is mainly meant for current ESTA GB members - not just West Midlanders - who are all very welcome to submit notice and reviews of local ESTA events to our Events section*, to list themselves as a Teacher in our Student Services section, to join in the debates in our Teacher Talk section, and to place small ads in any part of our Whatnots section. Sorry, non-members, but in this case it really is members only. You know how to join, don't you?
  • String students at College or Conservatoire and members of our sister organisations worldwide (E*TAs and *STAs) are also welcome to get involved in our Teacher Talk debates.
  • Anyone who wants to can list themselves as a Student and suggest useful (generally cost-free) string teaching resources on the web in our Student Services section, but the links list is not for promoting paid-for services or publications. Anyone can also send jokes to Whatnots, but they only go in if I like them.

*(don't forget to tell "News & Views" and the ESTA national website estaweb.org.uk as well!)

Is there any charge?

  • No. If you're eligible you get in free, and if you're not you don't get in at all.

How about a photo?

  • You can attach a small .jpg or .gif to a Teacher/Student/Sales/Wants entry, but size is strictly limited to a measly maximum 120 pixels wide by 150 pixels high (except in Events reports). Sorry to be so mingy, but otherwise these pages could take too long to load. If you send anything bigger I'll hack it down if I put it in at all.

Who do I send it to?

  • E-mail the text you would like to go in to estawm @ tiscali.co.uk. You must include the word ESTA (plus anything else you want) in the subject area of your e-mail because I will be using this as a 'spam' test, and messages not including that word in the subject are liable to get blasted unread.
  • Remember, I need your real name to be sure you are an eligible contributor, even if you want your contribution to appear anonymously.

How long is it for?

  • Small ads of any kind go out of date. I will assume, unless you specifically ask otherwise, that Sales and Wants and Student listing entries will expire in about 3 months, as will Public Notices unless they refer to dated events and will expire as the date passes. Teacher listings I will assume are good for a few years, but I may ask you to confirm they are still good every so often.

How to get in touch with you.

  • Please remember to mention how anybody who needs to can get in touch with you, or your entry may be a bit pointless. Think how they should do this. I don't recommend publicising your home address and phone number together (or burglars could ring to see if you're in.) Women especially might think twice about making their phone number public.
  • Unfortunately e-mail addresses on websites can get picked up by spammers and virus circulations. It's up to you to be satisfied your mailbox is protected. The trick I have used on this site (e.g. two blocks up from here) is to insert sneaky spaces on either side of the @ sign, so it's just text coloured blue. To human eyes it looks like a live hyperlink but it isn't really. This is probably the safest way to give out your contact.
